I had a perfectly working Vista install.. so i backed it up with Acronis..
then restored it on a bigger drive.. did the whole insert Vista setup DVD to
repair the boot process.. and it boots up... once everything is loaded it
stays horribly slow and with cpu at 100%...

Seems to be mostly svchost.exe, related to dcom launch process and plug n
play as the services attached from what i can tell.. but i'm not sure why it
would suddenly get dog slow..

For about a week on the other harddrive i've ran x86 Vista just fine and
runs smooth.. so i swap drives to this one and this is what results.

I also tried reinstalling onto that drive from scratch.. but even once i
make it through setup (which GRinnnndds through).. it does the downloading of
updates which literally took like 2 hours or more to complete...

So i'm guessing that x64 suddenly doesnt like something (hardware?) in my PC
but i'm not sure why, as x86 runs like a dream...

Anyone have any thoughts or similar experiences?

Using Acronis and restoring to a drive which is not plugged into the same
SATA connector or the same IDE setup (slave, master) is always a risk as
Windows stores that info in the registry and you can get conflicts.
Don't know of any reason you should have problems reinstalling from scratch
if you wiped you hard drive and set up a new partition to install on.

The drives in any case are SATAII's, seagates.. in this bigger case, 500GB..
however, i've also tried putting it back on a smaller 250GB drive, with the
same symptoms..

It was working fine on the 160GB drive before, on this same box, everything
described here is same machine related.

The motherboard is ASUS P5N32-SLI SE.. Vista supports it right out of the
box without any added drivers.

Again, I'm running 4GB of memory, which i was running fine before as well..
Vista x86 is running like a dream.

Its perplexing because even running a fresh install of x64 I run into the
same horrid sluggishness as it boots up and downloads updates etc.. never
smoothing out.. Its almost as if something in my PC has caused a problem with
ONLY the x64 installation, whether fresh or old.

this a new drive or one that had been working in another computer? What
interface: IDE, SATA or what? Does your motherboard/chipset support it
directly, or do you need drivers for it? What make and model of computer,

In this case its a SATA II port.. the same port.. so there should be no
issues with acronis, other than needing to use the original Vista disc to
repair the boot records...

but yeah.. going from scratch has me confused as to why that too has
issues.. bare bones and all.
