To get the icons back, right-click on the desktop. Select the View
menu, and check "show desktop icons".
The taskbar may have hidden itself. If it's hidden you can move the
mouse pointer to the very bottom of the screen and it should pop up.
If it does, right-click it, select Properties, and uncheck "auto-hide
the taskbar".

Taskbar and desktop icons have disapeared
Hi John
I have the same problem. After i start windows vist i got message that some
file with extension (dll) is missing. Also it says missing entry run. And
then my desktop icon missing and my taskbar missing. I didn't get vista
installation cd and i didn't make any restore points before. Please if you
found solution or if anyone know how to fix this help me.
Thank you very much.

I am having a similar problem, but it's worst than that. When i strated my
laptop there was no desktop at all (no background, icons, task bar, etc...)
just a plain Black empty background. I could feel the machine functioning
just fine, but missing something, luckily the Task Bar was accessable.
Restarted it and this i had the same thing but My Documents folde popped up
alone, eversince, i've been accessing the rest of the folders from there.
Background was restored, but the Task Bar and Menu aren't, and can't even
open them from the Control Panel.
It seems like a file was curropted/missing, because i tried all possible
ways (restored it to an earlier time, check desk, etc...).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I tried, but didn't help.

every time i start my computer. Couldn't make it permanent.
I hope someone knows how reply soon.

Hi there, I've experienced exactly that this morning. no Icons,no
menu, no desktop, just blue background and document box. The only
thing I could think of was that I downloaded a Limewire last night
from a torrent site. Maybe it had a virus. Thorough the document box I
got to the control panel and restored the system to a previous date.
It seems to have worked.

Consider this: Whenever a new error condition appears on your computer, it
is almost certain that there was some change to the computer soon before the
problem began. http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

Ok I've spent a bit of time researching this. I think it has something
to do with a virus causing 'Windows explorer' not to start up. You can
start it manually in taskmanager. The best post I found on the
subject was this: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-performance-maintenance/64188-desktop-pr...ems.htm

Taskbar and desktop icons have disapeared
This is how i fixed, from another post's respond.
Seems to be a common problem, but it's easy to fix. Follow these steps:
Click start, type 'regedit' and hit <enter> to open the registry editor.
Expand the keys at left to reach:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Click on this key, then locate the 'shell' string in the right pane. Double
click it, replace the contents with just:
explorer.exe
Click ok, then close the registry editor and reboot.
