Yeah, looks like we can play for a short period of time without logging
in, but that time has expired. I'm also getting "login" errors.

serious problems over there.
I'm installing Quake 4 and UT2004 to tide me over. 8*|

They're having weather related problems. Huge storms up North and much power
loss. You should be getting a message telling you that Steam can't connect
to servers. But many of my friends in the West and East are saying they are
able to get on now. I am in Mississippi and still can't get on, but the
Steam forums just came back up for me, so maybe full connectivity is right
around the corner.

Valve has owned everybody?
I really don't know
Rumours says that a major upgrade is ongoing - but this has last for at
least 12 hours
There's probably a guy or two working like hell to fix the problems
I am glad I am not in their shoes when the heat is over

What I am wondering about is WHY my Steam client when it can't connect
is asking for the password. And why I can't play anything.
I have checked "offline" somewhere, and that is supposed to let me
play offline (without connecting).
But that is obviously not working as it asking for the password and
refuse to start if it cannot connect to Steam.
This is VERY alarming, bacuase that means that ALL my Steam games are
unusable without a connection to Steam. And that was NOT the deal!
How do I start my single-player games when connections fails?
Do I have to remove my network drivers or disconnect the cable?
Or is it a HUGE bug that makes offline use not work anyway

No, but you should be able to play the single-user games.
There is an option for that in Steam (if network fails).
But obviously that is NOT working.
And that really pisses me off.
I can't play any of the games I have payed for offline!

Sorry if I came across snotty Peter - I've read altogether too much
whinging in other groups before coming to AGHL tonight. Folk with no
perspective in their lives.
Yes, once it all calms down and folk are safe etc then Valve definitely
need to look at and reconsider this - it is a definite weakness in the
system. It seems that while there are server farms all over the World
the authentication servers are in the Seattle area. (This is what I'm
getting from other posts - I don't know how true it is). If that's so
then changes are needed.

Our mailservers is located in Mississauga (Canada), Aix (France) and another
place servicing EMEA (can't recall where)
Don't know if Southern America and Southern Africa have their own setup
though =)
Well that is something that was common knowledge 10 years ago when I started
in the business
