I know the answer because I used google to find it way back then. The
answer is still there and easy to find.

Eh. I've played the P&P with randomly rolled HP - both straight roll,
and roll-twice-take best - as well as with simply giving average and
max HP per level (different campaigns, obviously) The balance isn't
thrown off to any noticable degree in those situations, because most
of the balance in P&P is about PC spotlight time.

Indeed. Which is precisely why assigned vs random *doesn't* throw the
balance off.

There's also one other factor, the DM.

Unlike the computer version though a DM can deliberately "fudge" his
rolls if he doesn't want a player maimed/killed/whatever.

The computer version has to be balanced out such that the average hp is
the normal, and max hp is an aberration.
Maxing the HP is going to unbalance things, just as extra levels or
items would unbalance things, since the computer can't really work
around that.

Yeah, but in CRPG you can always save and reload, so character death
isn't as "final" as it is in PnP. Is there anyone out there that has
*never* reloaded after their NWN character's death?

Fair 'nuff.
OTOH, unless the player is exporting "cheat" characters (where they've
maxed their HP, given themselves gold or magic items, etc.) to other
campaigns, who cares what the player does? If he "cheats" himself of
all the enjoyment or challenge, that's his business.

It's not like PnP where it reduces the enjoyment of the other players
because a player cheated so that the character outshines the rest of
the party. Mike S paid for a computer game, and he can play any way he
wants in the privacy of his home. He's not the first person to ask for
a "cheat", a little "how do you do this?" help, a workaround, etc.
_If_ he's hurting anyone, it's only himself cuz he's playing in a
manner that ends up *slightly* imbalanced, and it doesn't seem to be
bothering him any.

I agree...each player has his/her own style. For instance, I
personally don't like challenging rpg's and therefore am almost always
a "cheater". I'm an adventure gamer first and foremost who also
enjoys the rpg format. I like to wander around, look at the artwork
and manage the stuff. The combat is secondary to me. I ALWAYS play
on easy. I know it's terribly uncool to admit these things, but it is
my style of gameplay. Challenging, intense combat makes me feel
stressed and overwhelmed -- my reflexes are not fast. I realize that
most of the posters here are hardcore rpg types, but there ARE people
like me out there. I'm not saying that Mike S. is this way but just
wanted to give an example from a different perspective.
